About this room

The settlement started in the late 1870s as Martinsburg, founded by German families out of Fredericksburg looking for grazing land. It was renamed in 1892 when Wilhelmina Sophie 'Minnie' Luckenbach opened a post office and named it for her husband, Carl Albert Luckenbach. Max Beckman built the dance hall in 1922, a big tin-clad wood-beamed room with side flaps for summer ventilation, and it became the weekend gathering point for German brass bands, the Albert Echo Singing Society and the Gillespie County Singing Festival. The town declined from the 1930s; by 1985 the store was gone and the dance hall had been partitioned into a storage locker. It was bought and restored in 2004, sold on eBay in 2007, and has changed hands twice since.

Things you may not know
  • Albert and Luckenbach are named after the same man. Minnie Luckenbach named the post office for her husband Carl Albert Luckenbach, who had moved his store over from Luckenbach. Two honky-tonk towns, one namesake. Source
  • Lyndon Johnson went to school on the property. The one-room Williams Creek School sits behind the dance hall and LBJ attended it as a boy; the building still stands and hosts the Community Club. Source
  • The entire town was sold on eBay. Thirteen acres including house, dance hall, tavern and schoolhouse, listed in 2007 with a minimum around $2.5 million; more than 120 bids came in from 58 bidders. The seller had bought the place for $216,000 three years earlier. Source
  • At the time of the sale the town's population was the owner plus a groundsman on weekends. Source
  • The brass bands worked a circuit, rotating between the Albert, Luckenbach, Hye and Weinheimer halls. Source
  • By 1985 the dance hall was a storage locker, the store had been torn down and the school had become a community club. The population was 7 as of 2015. Source
