About this room
The Bellville Turnverein Gut Heil, meaning good health, organized in 1885 as a German gymnastics and social club and built an opera house in 1889 that became the center of the town's social life. It outgrew that, bought the Bellville Social Club's property in 1895, and hired local German-immigrant carpenter Joachim Hintz to build a pavilion. He completed it in October 1897 at a cost of $2,500: a twelve-sided wood-frame hall about eighty feet across, seating four hundred for dances, with the roof framing exposed inside and carried on a single central support. It is generally credited as the first round dance hall built in Texas, and it started a regional building type. The city has owned it since the 1930s. A restoration following Hurricane Harvey damage won a Preservation Texas Honor Award in 2023.

Things you may not know
- The band played in the middle and the crowd danced around them. The hall is designed around its center support; the band set up at the pole and the dancers circled it. Source
- The tables were hinged and swung up flat against the walls to clear the floor. Source
- Twelve sides meant special lumber: the geometry required extra-long boards shipped directly from the mills. Source
- Austin County has more multisided community halls than any county in Texas. Six or more polygonal social and dance halls survive there, the largest collection of the type in the state. Source
- The builder arrived from Germany at fourteen. Joachim Hintz came to Austin County in 1855 aged 14, and the twelve- and eight-sided hall built around a central pole became his signature. Source
