About this room

Forty charter members founded the Cat Spring Agricultural Society on June 7, 1856, making it the oldest agricultural society in Texas. It was a serious scientific enterprise: members ordered experimental seed from the U.S. Patent Office, tested it, and shared results on pest management, soil erosion, beekeeping and cattle. Meetings were conducted in German for years. The society built its permanent hall in 1902, a twelve-sided pavilion, one of several polygonal social halls in that part of Texas, constructed by its own members from drawings by Joachim Hintz. The hall is documented in the Historic American Buildings Survey at the Library of Congress and still hosts the society's June Fest and a large September antiques fair.

Things you may not know
  • The building has twelve sides. A dodecagonal pavilion, built that way in 1902, one of a small regional cluster of polygonal halls. Source
  • The society ordered its experimental seed from the U.S. Patent Office, where federal seed distribution ran in that era. They were running trials, not just farming. Source
  • Meetings were held only in German for years, with more than a hundred farmers attending. Source
  • The society paid $115.39 to get the building wired for electricity after San Bernard Electric Cooperative approved it as a member in March 1941. In 2007 matching grants covered $85,000 to rewire it. Source
