About this room

Club Westerner started in May 1927 as the pavilion dance floor of Pleasure Island, a Victoria amusement park that also held a skating rink, an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a baseball field where the Victoria Eagles played. The Cornelson Orchestra of Schulenburg played the opening dance on May 23, 1927. Its real life came later, as a salon: the Mexican-American dance hall tradition of South Texas, built around conjunto rather than polka. James Villafranca leased and booked the hall from the mid-1950s, drawing bigger crowds to his Sunday tardeadas than the Anglo-oriented evening events pulled, and the Villafranca family bought it outright in 1965. Where most South Texas salones declined through the 1970s and 80s, Club Westerner kept booking and has since shifted to serving mainly as an event center.

Things you may not know
  • It was an amusement park dance pavilion. Pleasure Island had a skating rink, an Olympic-sized pool ringed with trees and a ballpark. The dance floor outlived all of it. Source
  • Louis Armstrong played it in 1954, opening with 'When the Saints Go Marching In.' Source
  • The family had to borrow the purchase money from an individual because the banks would not lend it. The Villafrancas bought the hall in 1965 with a $56,000 loan from a prominent local businessman; Victoria banks at the time were reluctant to lend that much to Hispanic buyers. Source
  • The Sunday afternoon dances outdrew the evening ones. Villafranca's tardeadas pulled larger crowds than the Anglo-oriented night events at the same hall. Source
  • The bookings crossed every line the era drew: Bo Diddley, Sunny and the Sunliners, Little Joe y la Familia, Willie Nelson, Hank Snow. Source
  • Cars parked from the hall all the way to Moody Street on the big nights, by the owner's account. Source
