About this room
Theodore Van Buren Coupland, a Civil War major and former Travis County sheriff, founded the town on inherited land in 1887. The brick building on Hoxie Street went up in 1904 and spent decades as something other than a dance hall: it housed the Coupland Drug Company from 1911, later Albers Drugstore, with three doctors practicing upstairs. The adjoining 1910 building was the Coupland Tavern, then a hardware store, then a newspaper office, then a grocery. Owners converted the grocery space into a 7,000-square-foot dance hall in 1992. Abbey Road, a music-industry veteran on the advisory board of Texas Dance Hall Preservation, bought it in 2017. It announced its closure in August 2025, found a buyer at the last minute, and reopened that November under new ownership.
