About this room
Walter and Audrey Crider held a rodeo, dance and barbecue on July 4, 1925 to raise money for the Hunt School PTA. It worked, so they did it again, and by the early 1930s it was a weekly summer event. A wooden dance floor went in on the lower bank of the Guadalupe; after repeated flooding, including a bad flood in 1932, it was moved across the highway next to the Criders' store and Humble gas station, then relocated after the Second World War to its present spot overlooking the river. A lighted rodeo arena followed in 1946. The family has run it ever since, rodeo and dancing on Saturday nights from Memorial Day through Labor Day, outdoors, with live oaks growing up through the concrete dance slab. The July 2025 Guadalupe flood damaged the property in the venue's centennial year; the dancehall survived and the family has continued operating.
