About this room

Otto von Roeder settled at Shelby in 1841, and the community that grew up around his grain mill developed under the German Adelsverein in what is now far northwest Austin County. Its Harmonie Verein - a singing society - formed in 1875, and in 1883 the society built Harmonie Hall on four acres at a cost of $272.50. Wood exterior, tin roof. It became the center of social life in Shelby, promoting what the Texas Historical Commission calls the German-Texan virtues of song, community, art and science. Nearly a century and a half later it is still doing it: regular dances, polka concerts, and an antique show that draws visitors from across the state. The building has since been clad in metal siding and a metal roof, and the changes are visible in the roofline.

Things you may not know
  • The hall cost $272.50 and four acres. Source
  • A Harmonie hall had a specific job. German halls were built around a focus - bowling, gymnastics, shooting, agriculture or singing. Harmonie halls were for socializing and singing, and some still hold annual recitals. Source
  • The house rule for children is unusually precise: kids are welcome, parents are asked to let them run and slide ONLY during intermission, and to keep them off the dance floor at all other times unless dancing with a parent or family member. Source
  • The bar sells no liquor - beer, wine coolers, seltzers and soft drinks only - and no credit cards, no ATM on site, no outside drinks or coolers. Source
  • The metal siding hides the hall: a visitor described a massive building concealing the dance hall inside behind metal cladding, with a huge covered concrete pad outside the main door. Source
  • It is one of the largest all-wood dance floors in the area, by the hall's own account. Source
