About this room

Forty-eight German settlers near Burton organized the La Bahia Turn Verein on July 5, 1879, a gymnastics and social club, following the standard German pattern where the physical-culture club came first and the hall followed. They bought three acres fronting what is now Highway 237 in June 1884 for ninety dollars. The dance hall itself came later, around the turn of the century. The community it served never grew: the La Bahia post office opened in 1879 and closed in 1893, families left for Burton and Carmine, and the hall outlived the town around it. It is owned today by a nonprofit and pays for itself largely through wedding rentals.

  • Forty-eight men organized the turn verein on July 5, 1879. Source
  • The turnverein outlasted the town. The post office closed in 1893 and families moved away, but the organization was still active in 1988, 109 years on. Source
  • It survives on weddings, and that is the explicit strategy. The nonprofit's president grew up attending dances there; wedding rentals fund a traditional hall that is not trying to become a modern music venue. Source
  • The name comes from a road, not a mission: La Bahia takes its name from the La Bahia Road, the main county road running through. Source
