About this room

Stanley Kostoryz, a Czech immigrant, left his homestead in Nebraska for Corpus Christi in 1904. Knowing how many Czechs were already coming to Texas, he bought roughly ten thousand acres of unbroken land southwest of the city, subdivided it into farm tracts, and platted and recorded it in the Nueces County deed records as the Bohemian Colony Lands. A close-knit community of Czech farming families grew on it, and for a time the place was called Kostoryz after him. In 1923 those families formed the Moravian Club of Nueces County, sold three hundred shares to charter members at ten dollars apiece, and used the money to build the first Moravian Hall. It still stands on Kostoryz Road, seats about four hundred, and hosts the Czech Heritage Society of South Texas.

  • The street is named after the man who bought the land. The hall sits at 5601 Kostoryz Road, named for Stanley Kostoryz, who platted the Bohemian Colony Lands two decades before the hall existed. Source

  • The hall served weddings and funerals in the same room. Its original purposes were dances, wedding and funeral receptions, and meetings of the Czech fraternal orders KJT, KJZT and RVOS. Source
  • It runs two polka festivals a year, the Czech PolkaFest in February and the Summer PolkaFest in August, plus quarterly Czech Heritage Society meetings and dances. Source
