About this room
Mullins Prairie sits on FM 155 about six miles southeast of La Grange, where farmers first settled the land near the Colorado River in the late 1800s, the Mercer, Riser and Walker families among the earliest. A one-room school served the community in the 1890s, and by the early 1900s there was a second school for Black students. The school closed in 1947 and consolidated into La Grange ISD. Anton Elias ran a store and cotton gin here in 1939, and the building that stands now dates itself to 1949. By the mid-1990s the store was the only business left in a community of about fifty people. Marvin and Pam Henry reopened it as a bar and music venue in March 2018; it closed in May 2020, and Archie Patterson and Robert Thomas reopened it in February 2022.

Things you may not know
- The store outlived everything else in town. By the mid-1990s it was the community's only remaining business, and the population was fifty-two in 2000. Source
- The current owner bought it on impulse: Marvin Henry had always wanted to own a bar, found the site for sale, and called his wife to tell her the news. Source
- The dance floor is an outdoor concrete slab under century-old live oaks, and by one visitor's account the concrete is smooth enough to slide a boot across properly. Bands play inside on cold days and outside on good ones. Source
- A band pulls about a hundred people to a town of roughly fifty. Source
- Somebody tried to build a subdivision here in 1969. Realtors promoted River Colony just down the road from the store - a few homes, a clubhouse, a swimming pool and a sales office. It never grew. Source
