About this room
Two German men met under an oak on Quihi Creek on May 26, 1890, and organized a Schuetzen Verein, a shooting club. The marksmanship was the point: the settlement dated to 1846 and the club existed to make its men better shots. The dance hall was the social half, built so wives and children had somewhere to go. The community never grew past about a hundred people. The club now has roughly six hundred members. It still holds shoots, still holds dances twice a month, and still runs the burial fund it started in 1890.

Things you may not know
- The town is named after a buzzard. Quihi takes its name from the Mexican eagle buzzard, the caracara. Source
- Most of the hall extends out over Quihi Creek on dozens of six-foot cedar posts. The posts are flood clearance, but they also flex, and locals say the pylons cushion the dance floor. Source
- Until 1950 you had to read, write and speak German to join. The rule was replaced with a residency test: a member must be a man, at least 21, and have lived in Medina County for a year, and then the existing members vote on him. Source
- Since 1890 the club has run a burial fund. When a member dies, every other member puts in a dollar toward the funeral. Source
- Medina Electric Cooperative formed in 1938 and one of its first customers was this hall. The co-op wired the dance hall specifically to show local farmers what electricity did. Source
