About this room
The Round-Up opened on Cedar Springs Road on July 11, 1980, built from the start as a country and western bar with a hardwood dance floor for a gay clientele, at a time when Oak Lawn was a considerably rougher neighborhood and a bar like it was not an obvious idea. A six-alarm fire destroyed the building on February 23, 1989, set to cover a burglary next door. Staff and regulars decamped within days to a bar on Maple Avenue while construction started immediately at the old address, and the room was rebuilt as a deliberate recreation of what had burned. It reopened at the same Cedar Springs location and has run there since, now across several rooms and two levels with a two-story patio. The dance floor is still the point.

- The bars all have names: the Parlor, the Tool Shed, the Lone Star, the Horse Shoe, the Tequila Shack, and Chute 5 on the patio. Source
- Free dance lessons three nights a week for anyone who turns up not knowing how, and karaoke six nights a week. Source
- Two charity auctions a year, at Christmas and Easter, benefiting a local food pantry and Legacy Founders Cottage. Source
