About this room
Brothers Charles and Gustav Sengelmann built this two-story brick building on Schulenburg's Main Street in 1894, with a saloon and storefronts at street level and a dance hall upstairs. It anchored the town's German and Czech social life for roughly fifty years, then closed at the start of World War II. The ground floor went on to hold a Western Auto store and later an auto garage; the upstairs hall was simply shut and left. Houston artist Dana Harper found it in the late 1990s, spent over a million dollars on a restoration, and reopened it in June 2009. It went on the National Register that year and took a National Preservation Award in 2010. It closed again on January 31, 2025 and the property was listed for sale.

Things you may not know
- The upstairs hall sat untouched for about seventy years with the last party still in it: ribbons hanging from the ceiling, bottle caps behind the bar, and thousands of glass beads shed from fancy gowns worked down into the floorboards. Source

- The restorer is descended from a couple who met in Schulenburg. Harper's great-great-grandfather was oil wildcatter Hugh Roy Cullen, who met Lillie Cranz there; her grandparents were among the earliest settlers in the area. Source
