About this room

Sisterdale was founded in 1847 by Nicolaus Zink, a Bavarian engineer and freethinker who had surveyed New Braunfels for Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels. Over the next two years he was joined by Forty-Eighters, intellectuals fleeing the failed 1848 European revolutions, and the place became one of the 'Latin Settlements,' so called because the settlers read and wrote Latin. It was a center of German abolitionism and Unionism before and during the Civil War. The dance hall and opera house was built around 1890, and the site also holds a stone-block fort that predates the war. The town never recovered its population after the 1910s; the hall is now a wedding and event venue.

Things you may not know
  • Karl Marx's brother-in-law lived here. The Sisterdale circle included Baron von Westphal, along with Ernst Kapp, Ottomar von Behr, Adolph Douai, August Siemering, Julius Dresel and Julius Froebel. Source
  • Frederick Law Olmsted, later the designer of Central Park, visited and wrote about the settlement, as did John R. Bartlett and Duke Paul of Wurttemberg. Source
  • The settlers were proud of being able to read and write Latin, which is where the 'Latin Settlement' name comes from. Their stated aim was a utopian community: farm by day, argue philosophy at night. Source
  • There is a fort on the dance hall property with gun ports in it. The stone-block structure predates the Civil War; the walls are a foot thick with narrow angled openings cut through, the same principle as a medieval arrow slit. Source
  • The hall was an opera house before it was a dance hall, and later had a community grocery store and a post office attached to it. Source
