About this room

The settlement was established around 1865 by German Lutherans, joined soon after by Wendish families out of Serbin, and nobody knows why it is called Swiss Alp: there is no mountain within reach and the settlers were not Swiss. The Bruns family moved there in 1901 and put up a general store and a dance hall. What makes the hall unusual is that it was built specifically for dancing rather than as a lodge or meeting hall that hosted dances. The Tietjen family bought it in 1933 and ran it for generations, which is why locals call it Tietjen Hall. It peaked between the mid-1960s and early 1980s, when Saturday crowds ran seven to eight hundred. It now operates as a wedding and event venue.

Things you may not know
  • The hall was sold on eBay. The owners retired and put it up for auction on the site in 2017; bidding reached $82,100 across 93 bids, and the listing included a fully furnished cafe on the property. Source
  • Nobody knows where the name came from. TSHA says the origin has been lost to time. There is no mountain, and the town was settled by Germans and Wends. Source
  • The floor bounces because the hall was not built on a slab. Source
  • The hall hosted a 1945 course on egg production, and in 1952 the Farm Bureau met there to hear a speaker explain the new rural telephone cooperative. Source
  • Johnny Winter played here, along with B.J. Thomas and the Triumphs and Roy Head and the Traits, during the 1960s run. Source
  • Fights between school towns were a known feature: what happened on the football field Friday sometimes carried into the dance Saturday, with named local deputies and constables on hand to keep it contained. Source
