About this room

Watterson is an unincorporated community in Bastrop County named for Charles Coffin Watterson, who settled there with his wife Martha in 1852 to farm and raise livestock; the Wolfenbargers and others followed. The hall on Watterson Road was known for years as Big Annie's. It closed for a time and was reopened in 1986 by Annie's son LeRoy Wilhelm and his wife Betty, and the Wilhelm family runs it still. It is a plain old country dance hall with a big wood floor, a burger window, live bands most weekends, and big dances at Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's.

Things you may not know
  • It used to be called Big Annie's, and the family that runs it now are Annie's descendants. Source
  • Sandra Bullock danced here: the hall played the Cherry Hill Dance Hall in Hope Floats (1998). Source
  • The burgers come with a ticket and a table number, wrapped in paper in a paper boat, about forty-five minutes after you order at the window inside the door. Source
  • In 2019 the burgers were $3.50 and the beer was $2.00. Source
  • It is a genuinely all-ages room: teens, pre-teens and toddlers on the floor and at the tables alongside the adults. Source
  • Do not lock the third stall from the door in the ladies' room; it jams. The recovery procedure, per a visitor who learned it too late: unlock, jiggle, push the door further closed, jiggle again, pull. Source
