About this room
Drivers heading south on U.S. 287 between Mansfield and Midlothian pass a long white metal building set back among mesquite trees and grazing cattle, and most of them have no idea what it is. It started life as a skating rink in the 1950s and was converted to a dance hall about half a century ago. Every Friday and Saturday night since, live country bands have played to a 2,000-square-foot hardwood floor. It serves no alcohol - patrons bring their own and IDs are checked at the door - which is precisely why the room fills with every age group, from newborns to people in their nineties. So many teenagers started coming that the club added a Friday Teen Night. New subdivisions creep closer every year and the people living in them mostly do not know it is there.

- It was a skating rink first. The building opened as a rink in the 1950s and became a dance hall roughly fifty years ago. Source
- It serves no alcohol at all, and that is the point. Because nothing is sold, children and teenagers are welcome; patrons bring their own and nobody under 21 may drink. The liquor licence it does not have is what makes it a family room. Source
