Chapter 8 of 10

The Outdoor Pit as a Workplace

Where in the shift: all day.

The sequence

Fuel stored dry and away from the building.

Ash handled cold.

Heat and hydration managed.

And an eye on the fire when it is unattended.

The decisions

Where fuel goes. Dry and clear of the structure.

When ash is safe to move. Later than people think — coals hold heat for a long time and an ash container with live coals in it is a fire.

And whether anyone should be at the pit in the heat. A Texas summer at a pit is a heat-exposure question and the room should treat it as one.

What you are reading

The fuel's condition and location.

The ash.

And the person.

What goes wrong here

Ash moved hot.

Fuel against the building.

And heat exposure treated as toughness.

Verification

Look at the fuel and the ash container.

The boundary

Outdoor cooking, fuel storage, ash disposal, and heat exposure are governed by the applicable fire authority and by workplace safety requirements.
