Method

  1. Weigh sugar and water separately.
  2. Warm only as much as needed to dissolve; avoid unnecessary boiling or caramelization.
  3. Mix until completely clear and homogeneous, cool promptly, transfer to a clean food-safe container and label.

Simple syrup: working standard

Simple syrup is a controlled sugar solution, not an unmeasured bottle of sweetness. Standard and rich syrups have different concentrations, texture, yield and recipe impact. A volume-for-volume substitution changes the drink.

Sweetening ingredient that also changes body, aroma, color and dilution.

Write the formula by weight, define water quality, heating or cold-process method, finished yield, container, label and venue-approved hold limit. Rich syrup should be treated as its own ingredient.

Use clean measured bottles, keep the nozzle free of buildup and rotate first-in product. In batching, calculate sugar concentration and total water rather than adding syrup by intuition.

Common failures are volume-only recipes, incomplete dissolution, bottling hot without a plan, unlabeled concentration and topping old syrup with new.

Version control

Do not silently change the working formula. Record the recipe version, date, reason for change, test result and person approving the update.
