1. Technical foundation and vocabulary
Spirit character comes from raw material, fermentation, distillation, maturation, proof and service. Category labels are starting points; the bartender must translate structure and flavor into plain guest language.
Understand category, production, proof, flavor and best service use well enough to recommend and pour consistently.

2. Tools explained—not merely listed
Controls presentation, temperature, aroma and safe handling. Inspect for chips, odor, film and heat shock before use.

Before service, inspect every tool for cleanliness, damage, calibration, correct assembly and a stable home position. A tool is not ready because it is present; it is ready when it can perform its control reliably.
3. Complete operating method
- Define the result. Read the title, house standard and service context. State what a successful tequila, mezcal and agave spirits result must look, taste, feel or operate like.

Do not call a correction successful until the next measured result meets the original standard. When the cause is uncertain, reduce variables and compare a fresh control.

Worked example: the learner completes tequila, mezcal and agave spirits once under controlled conditions, records the result, then repeats it during this room condition: A guest asks for a Texas whiskey neat, another wants a smooth tequila shot and a third wants a mixed drink; the bartender must choose fit without slowing the queue. 8. Deliberate-practice progression

- Teach back. Demonstrate the task to another learner and answer “why” questions without relying on the page.

Pass rule: all safety and legal boundaries must be met, and the learner must produce three consecutive acceptable repetitions plus one successful pressure repetition. A trainer records any restriction or follow-up practice.

Why this matters
A spirit is shaped by raw material, fermentation, distillation, proof, maturation and blending. Category literacy should improve selection and communication—not become a memorized list of marketing claims.
