Terms can change by venue, region, contract, regulator, crew, and community. These definitions explain how the library uses the words; they do not override current law, agreements, or local practice.
- Advance
- The pre-show confirmation process covering contacts, schedule, production, hospitality, merchandise, guest list, payment, and day-of procedures.
- Backline
- Instruments or stage equipment supplied by the venue, artist, production provider, or another act.
- Barback
- A support employee who keeps the bar supplied, removes waste, resets tools and glassware, and helps maintain service flow.
- Break-even attendance
- The number of guests required for projected contribution to cover fixed event costs.
- Call time
- The time a performer, crew member, or employee is expected to arrive and be ready for assigned work.
- Changeover
- The period between performers when the stage, microphones, instruments, monitors, and lines are reset.
- Comp
- A product, ticket, or service provided without charge under an approved policy and documented authorization.
- Contribution margin
- Selling price minus variable cost; the amount available to cover fixed costs and profit.
- Cover charge
- Admission collected at the door, sometimes separate from advance ticketing or minimum purchase requirements.
- Dancehall
- A venue where dancing, music, and community gathering are central; the term can overlap with honky-tonk depending on the room and event.
- Door deal
- An artist-payment arrangement based partly or entirely on admission revenue.
- EPK
- Electronic press kit: approved biography, photographs, music, video, contact information, and performance details.
- Expo
- The person or station coordinating completed food before it leaves the kitchen.
- Floor host
- A person who welcomes dancers, explains basic floor flow, observes safety, and directs concerns to staff without acting as security.
- Food cost percentage
- Food cost divided by food sales, expressed as a percentage.
- Front of house
- Public guest areas or the audience-facing part of a production; meaning depends on context.
- Guarantee
- A minimum artist payment promised under an agreement.
- Guest lifetime value
- An estimate of the revenue or gross-profit value of repeat visits and referrals over a guest relationship.
- Holding statement
- A brief initial public response using confirmed information while facts are still developing.
- Honky-tonk
- A working social room shaped by music, drinking, dancing, staff, performers, regulars, and local norms—not simply western decoration.
- House band
- A recurring band strongly associated with a venue or named night.
- House spec
- The venue’s approved recipe or operating standard for a drink, dish, setup, or procedure.
- Input list
- A channel-by-channel production document identifying sources, microphones, DIs, stands, and technical notes.
- Line of dance
- The common direction of travel around a dance floor, usually counterclockwise unless the room teaches otherwise.
- Line check
- A technical confirmation that each sound-system input is connected and passing signal.
- Load-in
- The scheduled process of bringing artist or production equipment into the venue.
- Minimum spend
- A contracted revenue requirement, often used for private events or reserved areas.
- Music-night portfolio
- The mix of recurring live-music formats a venue operates across the week or month.
- One-sheet
- A concise artist or venue document summarizing identity, fit, proof, contact information, and next action.
- Par level
- The target quantity of an item the operation intends to keep available based on use, lead time, and safety stock.
- Pitmaster
- The person responsible for barbecue fire, cooking, holding, quality, and pit safety; title and duties vary by operation.
- Post oak
- A dense Texas oak commonly associated with Central Texas barbecue and a balanced smoke profile.
- Regular
- A repeat guest who understands the room and contributes through consistent, respectful participation—not entitlement.
- Residency
- A recurring performance arrangement involving the same artist or concept on a dependable schedule.
- Responsible service
- Alcohol-service practices designed to follow law and venue policy, prevent unsafe service, and support safe guest outcomes.
- Settlement
- The post-show calculation and documentation of artist payment, deposits, percentages, deductions, merchandise, and amount due.
- Show advance

- Soundcheck
- The scheduled process of setting levels, monitors, routing, and production details before doors or performance.
- Stage plot
- A visual diagram showing performer positions, instruments, microphones, monitors, power, and major equipment.
- Standard drink
- A public-health measurement of pure alcohol; cocktail serving size is not automatically the same as one standard drink.
- TABC
- Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.
- Ticket pace
- How quickly tickets are selling over time relative to capacity, forecast, marketing actions, and prior comparable events.
- Turn time
- The time needed to reset a table, room, stage, kitchen station, or event space for the next use.
- Two-step
- A traveling partner dance strongly associated with Texas country dance floors; timing and local style vary.
- Variance
- The difference between expected or theoretical results and actual recorded results.
- Void
- A canceled transaction or line item that should be documented and approved according to policy.
- Walk-up
- A guest who buys admission at the venue rather than in advance.
- Waste log
- A record of spills, spoilage, breakage, overproduction, remakes, comps, and other controlled losses.
- Zero-proof
- A drink presented without beverage alcohol; ingredients, extracts, bitters, fermentation, and cross-contact still require verification.
