Lesson 7 — Illness Reporting and Exclusion

Part of the Food Safety Control track. Lesson 7 of 10.

Where in the shift: before it starts.

Prerequisites: Module 2.

The sequence

Know the reportable conditions.

Know who has to be excluded and when.

And have the policy written down.

The decisions

Whether someone works. Not a judgment call and not a favor. The conditions requiring exclusion or restriction are defined by the local health authority and the policy should be written and known before anyone is sick.

Because the decision made in the moment, by someone who needs the shift covered, is the wrong decision.

What you are reading

The written policy.

What goes wrong here

No policy. A decision made under staffing pressure.

And an unreported condition — because nobody knew it was reportable.

Verification

Ask whether the policy exists and whether staff know what to report.

The boundary

Employee illness reporting, exclusion, and restriction requirements are set by the local health authority, and employment implications belong with a licensed attorney.
