Lesson 8 — Communication

Part of the Kitchen Foundations track. Lesson 8 of 10.

Prerequisites: Modules 1, 44.

The sequence

Acknowledge every call.

Say what you need before you need it.

Say when you are behind.

And write anything that has to survive the room.

The decisions

Whether to say you are behind. Yes, early.

And this is the hardest thing on the list, because a cook who is behind almost never announces it — announcing it feels like failure, per Module 1.

It is not. A problem announced at seven is a decision. The same problem discovered at nine is a bad night.

And whether voice will carry. During a set, nowhich means anything that has to survive gets written, and that is acoustics rather than diligence.

What you are reading

Whether your acknowledgment was heard.

What goes wrong here

Silence.

A call unacknowledged.

And a modification relayed verbally during a set.

Verification

Ask whether you were heard.

The boundary

Allergen communication is governed by applicable law and the local health authority.
