Lesson 1 — Extraction: Getting It Out of the Expert

Part of the Workplace Trainer track. Lesson 1 of 10.

The sequence

Watch them work.

Write down every decision point, not every action.

Ask at each one what they were reading.

And keep asking when the first answer is unusable.

The decisions

What to record. Decisions, not steps. A step is visible and a decision is noton a pit, the judgment looks like a person standing there.

How to handle "when it's ready." It is true and useless, and it is not withholdingexpert practice becomes automatic and the knowledge moves below the level of description.

So the follow-up is specific: what did you just look at? What did you touch? What would have made you wait?

The questions will be uncomfortable and productive, because the person has to reconstruct something they have not consciously accessed in years.

What you are reading

Where their eyes go. What they touch. What they do when something is not going as expected.

What goes wrong here

Actions recorded rather than decisions. A procedure that produces a different product in someone else's hands.

And the first answer accepted.

Verification

Hand the result to someone who has never done it. Whatever they get wrong is what the extraction missed.

The boundary

None specific.
